Our Masons Offer Professional Repointing & Tuckpointing Services
At Fireplace Safety Services, we spend a large percentage of our time and energy on keeping water out of your chimney system. But it’s not just the interior components of your chimney system that need protection from water – your masonry needs protection as well! That’s why we offer waterproofing services.
When you have your system professionally waterproofed, we apply a waterproofing sealant that is made specifically for chimneys. It works to keep water out of the brick and mortar while still allowing vapor to escape from the chimney as needed. Click here to learn more!
What To Do When You Notice Joint Deterioration
So your chimney’s masonry has already seen some damage, and you’re noticing cracks, holes and crumbling in your mortar? We can help! We can remove the old, water-damaged (or insect-damaged) mortar and replace it with fresh new mortar.
And the best part is, with our skilled masons, no one will be able to tell where the point work was done. That’s because our masons know their stuff and are experts at color-matching mortar and providing clean, well-blended results.
So What Does Repointing/Tuckpointing Involve?
To start, our technicians carefully work with specialized tools to remove the damaged mortar without harming the surrounding brick. As you can imagine, this takes great focus and care, but our masons are pros.
We grind out the joints to an even depth, clean the joints and then apply brand new mortar, being sure to carefully and evenly tuck and pack it in. We then smooth it over, being careful to keep the brick facing mortar-free. Once it’s adequately dry and even, we may opt to go over the new mortar with a soft brush just to help blend it with the older mortar.
Is This A DIY Job?
Absolutely not! Not only can poor or inexperienced masonry work result in less than beautiful results, but it can also result in a structurally compromised chimney. An expert and experienced mason will be able to color-match the mortar to the existing mortar, and provide strong, clean and streamlined results.
