We Can Restore Or Reline Your Chimney With HeatShield® Or Ahrens!

So you have a clay flue liner that’s been “through the fire”. Do you have to have a full rebuild or a stainless steel liner installed in order to safely enjoy your chimney system again? Not necessarily.

The technicians here at Fireplace Safety Services are expert installers of “pour-in” flue restoration and relining products like HeatShield® and Ahrens. These products are designed to give homeowners more wallet-friendly solutions to cracked or crumbling clay liners, and they can withstand extremely high temperatures from all fuels.

What Is HeatShield®?

HeatShield® is a cerfractory sealant designed by CeCure Chimney Systems that can be used to:

  • fill in and repair gaps, cracks or holes
  • resurface the entire flue
  • reline a chimney

The reason we love HeatShield® is that it’s a versatile product that can restore a damaged chimney liner, providing a smoke-tight, smooth surface once again.

How Does It Work?

The application process will vary slightly, depending on the condition of your flue liner. We start all applications with a cleaning and a prep coat, then:

  • If we’re simply “patching” up a couple of places, we’ll apply the product to the gaps, cracks and holes and use a foam applicator to fill and smooth.
  • If we’re resurfacing the entire flue, we’ll apply the product and use a foam applicator to fill and smooth over the entire surface, from top to bottom.
  • If we’re relining the flue using HeatShield®, we’ll apply the product, insert a “sleeve”, and then finish off with another layer of HeatShield®, smoothing over with a foam applicator.

What Is Ahrens?

Ahrens is also a pour-in style system, and is known as a “2-Liner Process”. Like HeatShield®, it is incredibly versatile, and can even be used to restore and resurface smoke chambers. What makes it so great? It can be used to:

  • insulate and strengthen the flue
  • fill in and repair cracks, holes and gaps
  • reline a chimney

This 2-layer system can be used with all fuels and is resistant to heat and byproduct corrosion. The double layers ensure that the flue gases stay hot and quickly rise up and out of the home, which means a reduction in creosote levels. The double layers (added insulation) also allow this product to be used for zero-clearance chimneys.

How Does It Work?

The product is poured into the chimney, and is applied in two separate layers (each layer must be applied in a single pour). The first layer is responsible for insulating, while the second layer provides protection and corrosion resistance.
